Create, edit, animate, and export Atari-style 8×8 fonts, tilemaps, and POKEY music—all in one creative suite.

ByteLoom Werx includes an experimental NTSC artifact-color preview with selectable NTSC and monochrome display modes. It may not perfectly reproduce every Atari, television, or emulator configuration, but it provides a useful approximation of how artifact-colored graphics could appear.

Features:

  • Edit complete 128-character, 8×8 bitmap fonts
  • Load and save raw 1024-byte .FNT files
  • Use four independent, animatable font banks
  • Stop animation on any bank and continue editing
  • Flip, shift, rotate, copy, cut, and paste characters
  • Select multiple characters using a rubber band
  • Preview pasted characters before placing them
  • Create normal and inverse characters
  • Merge four font banks into one 4096-byte file
  • Build 40×24 tilemaps with pencil, eraser, line, box, and filled-box tools
  • Select, move, copy, cut, and preview map regions
  • Pick characters directly from the map with the eyedropper
  • Show or hide tilemap grid lines
  • Undo and redo font and map edits
  • Export maps as .DAT files or PNG images
  • Export fonts and maps as BASIC DATA
  • Compose music with a multi-track piano roll
  • Draw sustained or individual notes and audition chords while composing
  • Create reusable instruments with envelopes, distortion, arpeggios, vibrato, slides, retriggering, and custom-drawn waveforms
  • Preview POKEY-style instruments and music
  • Import compatible SAP/RMT note data
  • Export music with a relocatable background player for FastBasic
  • Export selected font banks as FastBasic data with animation support
  • Generate a FastBasic DrawMap procedure
  • Combine fonts, animation, tilemap, music, instruments, and the background player into one ready-to-test FastBasic program

Some raw 8×8 fonts from other systems, including certain Commodore 64 fonts, may also load when their byte layout is compatible. ByteLoom Werx is primarily designed around Atari 8-bit graphics and sound—the system I grew up with and know best.

Thanks, working on some improvements and another demo.

For the fbcodetest.xex, you can use altirra or other emulator and move a ship around using the arrow keys (joystick not enabled or plugged in).
